Charlotte Image has a need for rising seniors to represent our studio during their final year of high school. Our ambassadors..

- Participate in individual portrait sessions as well as a group session with all the ambassadors.
- Doesn't mind Charlotte Image Photography flaunting their portraits on our website, facebook, twitter, senior brochures, and youtube.
- They enjoy the idea of giving their friends a hook up.
- Our ambassadors will be interactive with Charlotte Image on social media.

The partnership with our rising seniors is important to us and we intend to show our appreciation through many means. Below is just a sneak peek!

- Up to 2 complimentary photo sessions. First one will be in February/March with a focus on our studio and our warehouse locations. Think scarves, hats, accessories, formal dresses, sports gear, instruments, anything that defines you is exactly what we are looking for. During late spring and early summer we will head out doors in search of city views, open fields, and edgy independence.

A Family Portrait Session With Charlotte Image Photography

Time flys when your having fun. I remember the Manah family when their oldest was 3 months old! The parents have purchased a Charlotte Image Photography favorite, our beautiful Watch Me Grow expandable album. This album will act as a keepsake for their family and will be come the most treasured material possession in their home. The plush leather cover of the album has the children's names engraved in gold in the lower right corner. Each of the 10x10 pages has black mats with gold corners and displays the family's portrait through the years. Below is a look at their most recent shoot!

The Best Light Shows In Charlotte

The Christmas season is our busiest time of year. There is a renewed focus on family and making memories that brings many returning clients, and brand new ones, to our doors. We believe there is no gift better than a memory. Along with your family portrait, here are some ideas to celebrate the season with your loved ones.

1.Carolina Christmas at Charlotte Motor Speedway
One of the largest light displays in the United States! This 5 mile, 3 million light show begins at the zMAC dragway, goes past the Dirt Track, and into Charlotte Motor Speedway where you and take a lap on the actual 1.5 mile NASCAR track. Truly a must see!

2.McAdenville - Christmas Town USA
For 56 years, the village of McAdenville has become a symbol of family fun during the holidays. Hundreds of cars pass through this town with Christmas music on, hot chocolate in hand and windows open for the best view of the lights. Even Thomas Kinkade was inspired and made a painting of this quaint little town

3. Billy Graham Libary -
For those of faith, you may want to check out this light display with a live Nativity scene. There are carriage rides, photo ops, and a time to even pet the animals!

*BONUS*
Take your family out and plan to drive through neighborhoods to find the best, tackiest, funniest, etc light display. Make a note of where the homes are and next year, revisit the locations and make it a game to find one that tops the previous find.

Volunteering In Charlotte NC

What an amazing Thanksgiving weekend! Both Stephen and I (Becky, CIP office chameleon) flung open the door to Charlotte Image Photography this morning with Thanksgiving day tales, volunteer stories, and a new found appreciation for charitable organizations in our area. Here is a note from Stephen...

"Thanksgiving Day began early for us, we awoke early to make sure we were on time for our Volunteer commitment to The Second Harvest Food Bank. What a day to walk in a parade, it was just beautiful out! By arriving early we were able to mingle with folks at Second Harvest and watch all the other participants before our time to walk. Both sides of the road were packed and we were enjoying ourselves so much that we couldn't stop smiling and waving even if we wanted to. Avery, Joseph and Alex had smiles bigger than I have ever seen before. Avery especially, she smiled and waved to everyone as we pulled her with our wagon filled with our donated canned goods. Our family had a fantastic experience from walking in the Carolina Carousel Parade.We will make this a family event each year for now on. To us, there is no better way to spend your Thanksgiving holiday. On top of all the fun we were volunteering!

Friday came and again we were up early this time preparing and cooking for our homeless friends. We cooked a turkey along with all the fixings and brought everything to the studio along with our team of helpers that day. They included my family Joseph, Alex, Avery, Jessica and I. Also helping were my Sister Mary and her son Ryan along with his girlfriend Brianna. We also had Jonathan Dey and Erin Day to round out our volunteer’s.

Upon arriving at the studio we set up a staging area for the food and the gift bags we planned to distribute. Our initial plan was to invite those in need to eat at the studio and found we are on the wrong side of the city, most homeless locate themselves by the shelters. My sister Mary took Ryan and drove around looking for folks we could help and came across a shelter that was closed for the holiday. We packed up and drove to the shelter, parked the car, opened the trunk and they came to us asking for anything we had. All 25 lunches and 25 goody bags were given away! We distributed everything we had purchased from hand warmers to socks, shavers and much more.

Many lessons were learned this weekend and there are already plans in place to donate our time and efforts again in December. We came across some really nice people who were very thankful for our efforts. What an experience for all of us to be able to help in a way where we can look someone in the eye and shake their hands and know we are making a difference on that day. This weekend left us wishing we could make a difference like that every day."

We look forward to this session all year! The Dotson family will bring with them props and ideas and combine them with Stephen's creative talents. Together they come up with exactly what the family envisioned. Last year, they had a "Merry Krispmas" theme, featuring the family's favorite all American treat, Krispy Kreme. This year.... we can't tell. We are sworn to secrecy... but you can guarantee that after Christmas, we'll be posting their image on our facebook page.

Tip: The best time to send your cards is the first week of December. Get your orders in soon!

Charlotte Charities - Give Back With A Backpack

There are so many wonderful charities to contribute to this holiday season. For example, type "Charities, Charlotte NC" in Google maps, you will find 678 different entries. Charlotte is one giving city!

The Dey family recently came up with a project of their own and Charlotte Image Photography is jumping on board. The ideas was brought about due to the studio location. Having a photography studio on South Mint Street has put us in contact with some of Charlotte's less fortunate.
People who are homeless and in need are literally a block away. Starting November 25th, we will begin "Give Back With A Backpack".

Stephen, along with the rest of the Dey family, will be collecting backpacks and supplies to distribute to the homeless. For now, we have chosen a 2.5 mile radius around the studio with the hopes of properly assisting the dozen or so in our area for a whole year.

Ideas For Hanging Portraits - Charlotte NC

Lets talk wall portraits. Some may think of a thick, gold, ornate frame above an antique sofa in an untouchable marble floored living room. While there is nothing wrong that incredibly formal style, wall portraits can be more versatile than you may think. The increasing trend of displaying large portraits in you home in a casual manner offers flexibility in your home. While there are rule-of-thumb tips to go by, like keep the width of your portrait/art a few inches shorter than the width of the furniture it is centered over. Or relate your portrait size (including frames) in proportion to the space on a given wall. Balance may be achieved in many ways.

Take this photo for example. The collage offers a unique, customized option for your space with affordable 11x14 print sizes. This could be just the look your family room needs!

Take note of the photo with the three face shots of children. A 16x16 or 20x20 gallery wrap would be best suited for this look because your portrait can be warped around the edges and no frame will be needed. Brilliant!

For the photo in silver frames, a 14x14 inch print would be a perfect match when paired with a mat and frame for a lovely collage.

Photography is what we are good at. Creating portraits that tell the story of your family is our passion. However, to spice things up and keep our creative juices flowing, we like to participate in ALL the seasonal activities we can. For example, pumpkin carving.

This was my (Becky) first year at carving pumpkins. Purchasing a $4.00 kit at a RiteAid was the best investment I have ever made!

Charlotte Toddlers

What does Mulan, Hercules, The Princess & The Frog, and Enchanted have in common? Yes, they are all Disney movies, but there is something else that tie them together. Her name is Emily. She is celebrating her first birthday at the studio today by having some portraits made.

Both relationship style and formal portraits were taken to remember this precious time in her life. Through the years, we have found that children at this age have unique mannerisms and there are a few tricks to the trade that we have found to work well.

1. Children's songs such as the ABC's, and Happy Birthday are appealing to the little tikes.

2. Children's games such as patty-cake and ring-around-the-rosie are sure winners to get some participation from the kiddos.

3. Loony tunes type noises are golden. They may be crazy and a little awkward, but the "pop", "splat", "bam", "boom", "pow", and a sneeze can really help a little one snap out of a upcoming tantrum.

4. The secret weapon - the parents. Parents spend the most time with their children and on the rare occasion, they can perform a simple act like a fake hickup that will get a toddler giddy with laughter.

If you woke up with out power this morning, you're not alone. The crews at Duke Power are getting their fill of work today as they hustle around Charlotte to correct the outage caused by the nasty storm that passed through last night. Currently, stop lights are still out, parts of 485 are still blocked off due to down power lines lingering across the normally busy interstate, and a few business are depending on back up generators to salvage the morning and make for a productive business day.

Bright Beginnings Program in Charlotte NC

As you're aware, the Charlotte Mecklenburg school system is facing some challenging times. The impactful decisions regarding budget cuts effect not only the staff, but the children involved. Along with several other helpful programs, Bright Beginnings has found itself in the wake of termination. The Bright Beginnings program is a Title One program which includes 5 pre-kindergarten centers and 13 elementary schools in the Charlotte Mecklenburg School system. Literally thousands of children all across Charlotte have been directly effected by these carefully thought out programs that are designed to provide quality education.

With our future belonging to our children, giving them a great start is high on the priority list. By doing our part individually and working together as a community, a difference can and will be made. We're happy to be a part of a thriving area and thrilled to contribute. What's So Special About Freedom Park

Those of you who have lived in Charlotte for a while have probably heard of and hopefully visited Freedom Park. But for anyone new to Charlotte and wondering why it is the location for Charlotte Image's Holiday Portrait Special, Freedom Park is one of Charlotte's oldest parks as well as one if its most widely recognized scenic, natural settings.

The park was developed in 1948 as a memorial to World War II through the help of the Charlotte Lions Club. It has hosted the "Festival in the Park" every September since 1964 and for many years it was the location for the city's main 4th of July fireworks display.

Portrait of a Family-The Ensleys

With the change of seasons comes a sense of renewal, along with a sense of remembrance. We look back on the passing days with thoughtful contemplation, and look forward with a renewed sense of promise. As part of that reflection, we've decided to take a look at some of the amazing people we've worked with over the years. Looking back, we can see how the roots of this business took hold.

Over the coming weeks, we will be profiling some of the individuals and families that have worked with Stephen. In their own words, we want you to read about how they feel about working with Stephen.

The first family is the Ensleys, Rhonda, Michael and Hunter.

Stephen started to work with Rhonda and Michael for their wedding, first for Rhonda's bridal portrait and then the wedding itself. Rhonda described that special day,

"He has an ability to make/allow his subject to be themselves and brings out their inner beauty as well as their outer beauty. During the wedding and reception, I hardly knew Stephen was there but he certainly was. In fact he was everywhere. I was surprised to see how many photos were taken on that day and of the special moments captured. He was able to do this without being obtrusive and disrupting the feel of the day. Simply – he is fabulous!"

Fast forward (as life often does) years later, their son Hunter is a part of Stephen's well known Kid's Club. Rhonda told me she knew how important it was to capture those special moments of childhood from recalling the precious memories of her own.

"When I look back through old photos of myself as a child, my heart smiles. To hear my mom tell me stories that go along with those pictures is priceless. Unfortunately, there are not a lot of professional photographs of me as a baby. I knew that one day, my son would enjoy looking back at himself through the years. This collection of images are some of my favorite. Every time I see them, it is like a walk down memory lane and even now at the age of 6, my son loves to hear about himself and the things he did back then. One thing that you should understand about how strongly I feel about Stephen and his work – the first three years of my son’s life, we lived in Upstate New York. Therefore, we made 8 special trips to NC so that my son could have his portrait sessions with Stephen."

And what is it like to work with Stephen? Rhonda puts it simply,

"In one word FUN! My family enjoys our sessions with Stephen. We are always relaxed and laughing. It is just his way! How is he working with children – Amazing! Part of my decision in selecting Stephen for our wedding was based on his portfolio of work with children. I could tell that he was great with children and I knew that I would want him capturing similar moments with my children. Stephen has an amazing ability to engage children during the session so that they are having fun, laughing and smiling. My son is excited when we go see “Mr. Stephen” and always runs up and gives him a big genuine hug."

Stephen Dey's Lighting Perspective - Outdoors

Many clients want an outdoor setting for their portrait; they like the idea of a natural scene with natural light. Dealing with outdoor lighting is very different than studio lighting. For many photographers shooting outdoors, the lighting dictates the timing and the setting of the portrait. Stephen Dey, on the other hand, takes a different and unique approach to outdoor portrait sessions.

Once the client has chosen a general location for the portrait, i.e. their backyard or a park, Stephen carefully studies every aspect of that location. He's considering his overall design, the lines he wants to create, the format he wants to use. He has an uncanny knack for seeing what others overlook, but that will generate the most impact within the image.

When the scene is chosen, Stephen studies the natural light and where and how it falls at different times. This careful study helps him to choose just the right supplemental lighting to complement the natural light that is already there.

There is natural light, i.e. the sun, and artificial light. When working in the studio, a photographer is dealing with artificial light, light he or she creates. It might be direct light, difused light or any combination of the two. An inexperienced photographer is only able to create a small number of those combinations while a professional photographer can produce hundreds of combinations.

Before Charlotte professional photographer Stephen Dey ever begins photographing a client in studio, he consults with the client in order to get to know them, understand what type of mood they want to convey in their portrait, where they intend to display the portrait, and any other significant details that will help him set a scene that is singular only to them.

With that knowledge in hand, Stephen turns on the light, as few or as many as are needed to enhance the scene. He directs the lighting from different angles, to the side of the client, from overhead, from behind, etc., until he finds that perfect combination of ambiance and texture that is right for the client, the moment, the image.

In the end, there is nothing artificial at all about the light or the images that Stephen creates.

What makes a photographic image come alive? Why does one image look flat or dull while another has dimension and life? How does a professional photographer like Stephen Dey create images that burst from the canvas? The simple answer is lighting. But if it were really that easy, we would all be able to create true to life photographs.

There is much more to it than turning a few lights on your subject. To get the highest quality and the most life in any image, the photographer must not only use light but understand it. Truly understand it. Understand its nature. Understand the ratios of light that will evoke the most memorable image. Understand the unique images that even a slight variation in the light's angle can create.

When one understands light, then one truly sees it. Seeing light is an acquired art form. It takes years of study and experience. When a Deal Isn't Really a Deal

Last week, we talked about the difference in artistic quality between the images taken at a photography chain or big box store and those of a credentialed photographer. Hands down, image quality is significantly higher with the latter. Despite that some of us are still tempted by the perceived bargain and convenience of the $9.95 portrait specials.

First, let's look at the bargain aspect. Most of the chain or big box store advertisements you see in newspapers or mail inserts offer a $9.95 portrait special or something similar. What you don't realize, unless you read the super fine print, until you've dressed up the kids, driven to the store and had the portrait taken is that the $9.95 portrait comes from the first photograph taken. This is irregardless of whether the kids are actually smiling, everyone looks good or it's the image you prefer. Of course, you can buy additional portraits of another image taken but there goes your attempt to save some money.

Second, are the chain and big box stores really more convenient? Unless you time it just right, most likely you aren't the only one who saw that insert and thought it would be a snap to dress up the kids for quick portrait session. After waiting in line behind all the other parents, what kind of mood are you all in and what is the condition of those previously neatly pressed outfits. Most likely the answers are irritable and sloppy.

Now, imagine this - a studio where there is no bait and switch; a studio where an appointment is easily made that guarantees no waiting; a studio that is located in a clean and relaxing facility; a studio where the photographer knows how to make everyone look and feel their best during the portrait session, children especially. Athletes training for a marathon or other major sporting challenge know the importance of keeping their bodies hydrated. Drinking plenty of liquids, especially good, old fashioned water, helps keep the body healthy and functioning properly.

Although you don't need to train before having your portrait taken, you do need to follow the athletes' cue and stay hydrated. Why? Hydrated skin looks younger, firmer and healthier, which is exactly the way you want to look in your portrait.

Your Child's Portrait - Preparing for the Big Day

The whole point of this Charlotte Image blog series has been to ensure that having your child's portrait taken is a dream experience and not a nightmare you never want to repeat again. Making all the arrangements (photographer, portrait setting and appropriate portrait timing), is done. Now you are just waiting for the big day.

While you're waiting, make sure you properly prepare so that everything turns out just the way you want it to:

Two to three weeks prior, take care of any pre-portrait haircuts. This gives the hair a chance to grow back a bit and look more natural.
One week prior, pay attention to your child's hydration, as well as your own if you'll be in the portrait with them. Start drinking lots of water. This helps skin tone and overall health which will reflect in the portrait.
The night before, put your child to bed early for a good night's rest. They will look more refreshed in the portrait and there will be less chance of crankiness.
The day of, make sure regularly scheduled meals and naps take place as usual so that your child looks and feels his or her best for their big day.

Your Child's Portrait - Timing it Right

We've talked about the right photographer and the perfect photographic setting for your child's portrait but now it's time to get down to real brass tacks - what is the appropriate timing for a child portrait.

Age wise, children can and should be photographed at various ages to capture just how they are at each particular stage of their growth. A gifted photographer can handle newborn subjects as easily those in the terrible twos, or even the rebellious teen years.

When it comes to appropriate timing for a particular portrait session, there are several things to think about before you call to make your appointment. While these circumstances are particularly important for smaller children, they can apply to older children as well as mom and dad.

At what time of day is your child in the best mood: Throughout any given day, children have cranky moments and happy ones, and for most there is a pattern to it. Quite honestly, this is true even for teenagers and adults. Some people are just morning people and others need to be left alone until later in the day. Schedule your child's portrait session within that period during the day when they are typically in the best mood.
What is your child's daily schedule: Think about meal and nap schedules and avoid scheduling a session right before a meal, most of us are cranky when we're hungry, or during the middle of their normal nap time.
What else is going on in their lives: For example, if a two month old has his eight week check up scheduled for a certain day, either schedule his portrait session for a day prior to the doctor's visit or for several days after. Children can be irritable and not feeling their best after vaccinations. Or say your pre-teen is getting her braces off soon, consider an appointment beforehand. Or vice-versa if she is getting them removed in another month, wait and schedule the portrait for a beautiful reveal of her new metal-free smile.
Did something come up in the 24 to 48 hours before the portrait: It happens. Babies teeth, children get sick with ear infections, colds, the flu. And so do parents. Consider the particular situation, can it be taken care of so as not to interfere with the portrait, i.e. some babies respond well to Anbesol when teething. If not, call and reschedule. Good, quality portraits do cost money and they are worth it but not if someone isn't feeling well and it shows in the image. Your photographer should be accommodating and more than willing to find a more suitable time for your session.

Your Child's Portrait - Choosing the Perfect Setting

Welcome to part three of our series - Your Child's Portrait. Once you choose the right child portrait photographer, the next step is choosing your setting. It can be in the photographer's studio or at an off-site location but either way, you need to consider six things when making this choice. The location should...

Make your child or children feel comfortable: You can pick the most beautiful setting, either a backdrop in the photographer's studio or some idyllic spot outdoors, but if it makes your child apprehensive the scenery won't matter. It will make for a more stressful experience and a less than expected portrait result.
Put your child or children and you in a good mood: The happier anyone feels, the better they photograph. This is especially true of children. Plus, if they start out happy, the odds that the entire portrait session is an enjoyable experience are much better.
Take into account your child's personality: If sitting still is hard for your child, then consider more of an action shot. The subject doesn't always have to be standing in place or seated in a portrait. If your children are always on the go, capturing them in motion together may better reflect your family and thus better tell your story.
Possibly has significant meaning for your family: Is there a spot that holds a special place for your family. This is a way to make your child's portrait more specific and unique to them. Plus it will most likely help achieve goals 1 and 2.
Fit in with the mood and decor of the place you plan to hang the portrait: If you are hanging the portrait in a formal dining or living room, then you might want to consider a more traditional setting. Whereas if you plan to hang it in a more casual room in your home then you have more leeway to think outside the box with your setting.
If outside the studio, a place where the photographer is willing to go: If you have a particular off-site location in mind, make sure the photographer you have chosen is willing to go there.

You should discuss all of these points with your photographer before the actual portrait session. If you don't have a particular setting in mind, ask the photographer what he would suggest. Make sure you tell him of any specific likes or dislikes that your child has, as that will help him help you pick the perfect setting.

Bad experiences tend to make us avoid similar situations ever again. Like going to the dentist when he doesn't use enough Novocane while fixing a cavity. Ouch! Many of us are tempted to avoid the dentist for life after that.

Unfortunately, some of us have had a similar nightmare trying to have our child's (or doubly worse children's) portrait taken at a photography studio. There is the cajoling, followed by whining, crying, headaches, tears, and crankiness all around. Ouch, ouch!

Don't let that bad experience stop you from ever having another child's portrait taken again. The truth is there are ways to make the child portrait experience a dream come true rather than a nightmare. The first and most important key is the photographer.

Just because someone has a camera and a place to take photographs doesn't mean they are qualified to photograph people, must less children. In actuality, it takes a rare breed with excellent credentials to take quality images and a special personality to put children at ease. And as we all know when the little ones are at ease, they photograph the best and everyone has an enjoyable time in the process.

There are three easy steps to determine if the photographer you're considering is the right professional for you and your child or children.

Ask about and verify the photographer's credentials. Find out about their photography education. Did they learn their technique in school or on the job? Are they certified? If so, what level and do they regularly renew their certification? Why are all these questions important? Because you want a photographer whose technique has been finely honed, as well as reviewed and approved by leaders in the industry like the Professional Photographers of America. This will ensure you end up with a quality portrait.
Check their references. Ask the photographer to provide you the names of other families who have used his or her services. Also, check in with parents you know or online groups like Charlotte Mommies to see if anyone has worked with the photographer before. Ask what their experience was like? Did the photographer interact well with their children? Did he or she get impatient or did they connect with your child? And, of course, were they pleased with the end result - their child's portrait.
Talk with the photographer. Either by phone or in person, take some time to talk with the photographer to get a sense of their personality. Then trust your instincts. Did you get a good feeling? Did his personality click with yours. Was he or she friendly, willing to answer your questions, interested in the occasion or reason for the portrait? It's a little bit like interviewing pediatricians before the birth of your child. You want someone whom you are comfortable with and whom you are certain your child will be too.

The minute we become parents we begin photographing our children - in the crib, in the bath, in mid diaper change.
